The first session is called an intake. This includes a clinical interview where I collect information about your background (e.g., family, childhood history, work, substance use, cultural or religious components, strengths, mental health history, etc). Ideally, during this session, we would also talk about what your goals are and what you want to get out of therapy (sometimes, there is so much history to discuss, we resume the goal discussion for session #2). After we talk about goals, we will work together to identify the best modality for you (e.g., CBT, ACT, etc). We collaborate to identify useful homework so that you can move towards your goals and see improvements. Most importantly, I want you to feel like you are reaching your goals. One thing we know is that research shows venting is not always useful. Having a solution focused approach is often the best way to reduce stress and frustration.
